Scott S was an early arrival at 6:45am and began to set up his newly built BBQ pit for it’s inaugural run with the club. This year, we were bumped from under the big shade tree to a spot without any shade. This didn’t make too many happy campers with the club.
Within a short while, Madison arrived with his M37 and began to setup his impressive display of ‘gadgets’ he’s collected (and used) over the years. Glen showed up in his CJ-2A and Danny came in with his M37. A short time later, Milburn L arrived with his Scout Car, followed by JD H with his GPW from Corpus Christi. The big trucks came out with Rory and his son in the M813 five-ton and Jeff L in the Unimog. Jeff McD slipped in in his MB as did John K and his MB.
Danny brought a couple of the large EZ-Up tents that were a lifesaver. The temperatures were unseasonably cool, but the shade provided was welcomed. About 12:45pm, the five quarter-tons headed off to transport the VIP’s while Scott S fired up the pit and tossed on the Jap Boats. They were sliced and deseeded/deveined jalapenos with some marinated venison back strap placed in each, and wrapped in a piece of apple smoked bacon and held together with a toothpick and finally dusted with a maple bbq rub.
Scott then got the burgers going (Jeep Burgers) that were quarter pound burgers splashed with wooster sauce and sprinkled with TexasBBQRub and Montreal Seasonings. While cooking Scott added a dollup of Fischer and Wieser Raspberry Chipotle on each along with two pcs of bacon that had been cooked with brown sugar and a dash of cayenne pepper. Then, a piece of Colby-Jack topped it off. Lunch was a great hit with the group and the new pit was a success.
The show went off without any problems other than last night several planes couldn’t get out of Midland so they didn’t make the show. Also, the winds were quite severe today and the B17 tried three times to make a landing and opted to not try a fourth since each time it drifted across the full width of the runway in a crosswind. The planes that did fly performed a decent, albeit scaled back show. There were no ToraToraTora planes this year either. In retrospect, it was a very small show.
When the missing man formation flew by, the crowds departed like water over a fall.
Overall, it was a great event for the club and some good chow to boot.
