EVENT: WW1 Over There
LOCATION: Camp Mabry, TX
This event marked the 100th Anniversary of the first engagement of the 36th Infantry. The original battle took place October 7, 1918. The divisions were poorly supplied, exhausted, and outgunned, yet fought on with determination and courage.
Our days started with rain and thunder which provided an artillery-like background. Temperatures were in the 80s and everyone was soaked in wool uniforms. We had about 50 Doughboys and 20 Germans with working machine guns and field artillery.
The visitation over the weekend totaled 1,914. Filming took place for inclusion in the Texas Military History Museum. I wore my grandfather’s dog tags in his honor as he too was “Over There.”
We took home the FALLEN HERO AWARD and enjoyed the camaraderie and history we shared.
